Patna, March 4 : JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar is more of a 'deshbhakt' (patriot) than BJP leaders who have dubbed him anti-national, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said on Friday.
Nitish Kumar made the remarks after ending a two-day visit to Nepal, and a day after Kanhaiya Kumar was released after being in jail for 20 days on sedition charges.
NEW DELHI: Returning to a hero's welcome in the university after spending three weeks in detention over sedition charges, JNU students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar delivered a powerpacked political speech.
Kanhaiya, who has been accused of sedition, was granted a six-month interim bail by the Delhi High Court on Wednesday.
It was inevitable that the kind of muscular nationalism favoured by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would lead to hooliganism by its followers among the lawyers in the Patiala House courts where Kanhaiya Kumar, the Jawaharal Nehru University (JNU) student leader, was being charged with sedition. However, as a result of the thuggish behaviour of the saffron lawyers, the high ground which the BJP had thought it had climbed by playing the patriotic card in the JNU affair has slipped from under its feet.
Apart from the party, the two persons whose reputation has been tarnished are Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi.
Begusarai (Bihar), Feb 19 : JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar's father on Friday accused the BJP and RSS of "fixing" his innocent son and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the JNU row.
"Kanhaiya didn't shout anti-India slogans. He is innocent. The BJP and the RSS is trying to fix him," Jaishankar Singh told media here.
