Meet Prabakaran, Poet and Tamil Language enthusiast who has been running a library called ‘Thiruvalluvar research library’ in his small house in Chitra Nagar Slum in Kotturpuram. This library is the house to around 10000 books ranging from 50+ year old hand written letters to omnibus collections of many authors’ works and pretty old newspapers – A personal collection of around 45 years.
The recent rains in their act of washing out the city have also left their trail on the library. Almost all the books are soaked in water and are at the verge of decomposing. But the man is not losing his hope. He has got the keys for the community gym where he is cleaning and drying the books – one by one. Not an easy task it is.
Although we managed to help him transport a major chunk of the books to the gym, there is lot more that we need to do to preserve the books and the knowledge base that he has steadily built over these years. It’s not just a library that will be saved but all the tales the books carry about the hundreds of hands that touched them.
Anyone who can help him in re-set up of the library, please feel free to drop by at the Chitra Nagar slum or get in touch with us.
