United Nations, April 27 : More than 280 schools have been damaged by the earthquake that hit Ecuador on April 16, leaving at least 120,000 children temporarily without education, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) said.
"Education is a lifeline for children going through the trauma of chaos and destruction," said Grant Leaity, the UNICEF representative in Ecuador, on Tuesday, Xinhua news agency reported.
Quito, April 27 : A team of experts from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will arrive in Ecuador to evaluate the damage caused by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake on April 16, an official said.
The team would create a document to measure the full economic extent of the damage, in order to establish the amount of money needed for reconstruction, said Oscar Bello, coordinator of ECLAC's disasters unit, on Tuesday, Xinhua news agency reported.
Quito, April 20 : The death toll from April 16 earthquake in Ecuador rose to 480 by Tuesday morning, Vice Interior Minister Diego Fuentes said.
Around 4,027 people were injured and 231 missing, the vice interior minister was cited by local daily El Telegrafo as saying, Xinhua reported.
With the death toll likely to rise further, a visibly moved and grim-faced Correa warned that Ecuador's biggest disaster in decades would put a big toll on the poor Andean country.
