Aug 3: The 31st Olympic Games will officially begin today at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The opening ceremony begins at the Maracana Stadium. Around 205 countries were participating in 42 olympic sport discipline, in 306 events and in 37 venues. The venues will be grouped into four zones: Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracana.
The game is officially announced to take place between 5th and 21st on this month. The opening ceremony has started at midnight on friday, but the game has started two days before with women's football tournament due to packed schedule.
Athletes and journalists have expressed concern about traveling to the Zika affected Brazil to compete in Rio Olympics. Now journalists are opting out entirely. Several NBC employees are not willing to travel to Brazil to cover the games. Brazil is the country hardly-hit by the mosquito-borne virus ZIKA, which can cause severe birth defects, including babies born with abnormally small heads.
NBC is sending more than 2,000 employees to Brazil to cover the Olympics, which take place Aug. 5-21. The company said no one will be required to travel if they believe their health would be at risk. Several employees have already told NBC that they will not go to Rio.
