India’s main opposition Congress party on Monday elevated Rahul Gandhi, the scion of the country’s most fabled political dynasty, as its president, preparing to challenge the dominance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of national polls in 2019.
In a long-awaited move, Gandhi, the great-grandson of India’s founding prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, was elected unopposed to head the party. He will take the reins from his mother Sonia, the party’s longest-serving president who was elected in 1998.
The Congress on Thursday suspended former Rajya Sabha MP Mani Shankar Aiyar from primary membership of the party and issued a show-cause notice to him for his comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Mr. Aiyar had earlier expressed regret for his comments after public censure from Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
In a blow to the Gandhis, the Delhi High court on Friday allowed an Income Tax investigation into the National Herald case.
Following the order, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi will face trial.
Earlier, Patiala House court had allowed investigation of Gandhis in the case, which was challenged at Delhi HC.
The official Twitter account of Rahul Gandhi was hacked this evening and tweeted out multiple abusive tweets.
In all, seven tweets appeared in about five minutes, most of them referring to his "corrupt family."
