Rather than leave, the 3,000 inhabitants of Miyakejima island, Japan, decided to wear gas masks 24/7 so they could remain on the island. The active volcano, Mount Oyama on the Island had spewed poisonous gas for the last two decades. In July 14, 2000, Mount Oyama began a series of eruptions and all residents were evacuated as there had been a constant flow of sulfur dioxide gas coming from Mount Oyama. The last eruption was in 2006. Meanwhile from February 1, 2005, the residents were allowed to return permanently to Island and they are required to carry gas masks with them at all times, but they do not need to be worn constantly. Alarms go off if there is a dramatic increase in the levels of toxic gases in the air.
The incident happened around 2:30 pm at Pallikaranai in South Chennai..
