The Mental Healthcare Bill, which decriminalises suicide and guarantees the right to better healthcare for people with mental illness, was unanimously passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
The Bill mandates that a person attempting suicide shall be presumed to be suffering from “severe stress” and, therefore, shall not be tried or punished by law. Further, the new Bill mandates that persons with suicidal tendencies be provided help and rehabilitated.
Martyrs’ Day which is observed on March 23 is also knowns as Shaheed Diwas or Sarvodaya Day. On this days, Indians pay homage to three martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country. Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru are remembered on this day and homages are paid to the freedom fighters for the contribution to the freedom struggle of India. The revolutionaries were hanged to death for not obeying the orders of Britishers and demanding freedom from them. Shaheed Diwas honors the ultimate sacrifice made the men that contributed in Indian getting freedom from alien forces.
Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru’s sacrifice remembered on Shaheed Diwas. All the three revolutionaries were arrested on murder charges which gained national momentum. They were sentenced to death in the Lahore conspiracy case and were hanged to death on March 23, 1931, at 7.30 pm in the Lahore jail. Their bodies were cremated on the banks of the Sutlej River. Bhagat Singh who attained martyrdom at an age of 23 became an inspiration for generations to come. He became the face of nationalism and hero figure in the eyes of Indians.
