New Delhi: The government has announced that the service tax ranges between 5 to 20 percent in addition to taxes can no longer be held mandatory by the restaurants. A Press and Information Bureau release on January 2 states that service charge is payable only on the consumer’s discretion and it can be waived off when the customers are not satisfied with the service.
"Restaruants (sic) are billing service charges in addition to taxes. Service charge is optional. Consumer has a discretion to pay or not," tweeted Consumer Affairs and Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan.
